About
Dwell Soul Care - The Vision
To offer safe space for fellow travelers on the Christian spiritual journey to experience the loving hospitality of Jesus, who invites us to “Come and See” where He dwells within our hearts and lives, offering provision for our souls and assuring us of our belonging as Beloved children of God (Romans 8:16).
hospitality for the soul
As an Asian American, I grew up experiencing love and hospitality through the opening of homes and the sharing of food. For me, a sense of love and belonging is deeply and culturally woven into home and sharing food/sustenance. The moments in Scripture I found most inviting were those of Jesus’ hospitality, many of which happened to be around dwelling and food-
- An invitation to the desire to be with: John 1:37-39 – At the beginning of His ministry, when Jesus asked the two disciples “What do you want?”, and they responded with “Where are you staying?” (a desire for being with), to which Jesus responds with the invitation “Come, and you will see”.
- An eager longing for shared sustenance in the midst of suffering: Luke 22:14 – At the Last Supper, when “he said to them, ‘I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.’”, where Jesus longed to be with his disciples before His final hours.
- The hospitality of provision: John 21:12 – After His resurrection, when the disciples were lost and grieving and had returned to their everyday ordinary lives as fishermen, Jesus appeared on the shore in the morning, supplied all they could not acquire on their own all throughout the night (fish), and said “Come and have breakfast”.
- A promise of hospitality for now and the future: Revelation 3:20 – At the end of time, Jesus says, “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.”
- Hospitality extended and received: Luke 24 – The disciples unknowingly welcome the resurrected Jesus into their home (open in hospitality to Him) on the road to Emmaus, and Jesus breaks bread and offers hospitality to them, both physically and spiritually. “Were not our hearts burning within us?”
Dwell Soul Care was born out of that vision of God’s hospitality to us, which He invites us to experience as we open our souls in hospitality to Him. When I meet with my directees, the image that most often arises from my prayer in preparation for our meeting times is always that of Jesus, beckoning us forward just as we are, promising to hold our burdens for a while as he invites us to “Come, and have breakfast” with Him (John 21:12). When I offer spiritual direction, it is about setting that table, providing safe space to come as we are to notice and respond to Jesus – the one who loves us, knows us, and sustains us. My prayer for my directees, is that they too would “taste and see that the Lord is good” and know increasingly what it is to “dwell in the house of the Lord” together.
“One thing I ask from the Lord,
this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
and to seek him in his temple.”
-Psalm 27:4-5
